Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
The co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how parent company the multinational conglomerate blocked the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he plans to independently develop this new flavor within an individual collection highlighting causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders versus Corporate Owner
The recent development deepens the ongoing disagreement among the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the UK-based packaged goods giant that has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed that Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol of Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for the product's name and potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, that match those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand that originally established several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Future Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to develop other ice cream flavors that address concerns that the company was prevented from speaking about openly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company recently, following decades of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
