Edwards along with O'Neil represent the initial candidates in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolves.
The previous coach was sacked on Sunday following the squad's 10-match without a victory start to the Premier League season.
And both candidates - each of whom have historic links to the team - are among the names to be considered by the club ownership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would create a possible hurdle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton Town manager - who played over a century of games for Wolves during his playing career - is considered a leading candidate for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the club board as they begin the process of hiring a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise candidate, although he would be a shock choice given he was sacked by Wolves in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United player is currently unemployed which means Wolves would not be required to provide any compensation.
