The Clarets Clash With United in Pivotal English Top Division Encounter

Ruben Amorim's time at Old Trafford has been labeled a notable failure. By any measure, his performance is notable for all the wrong reasons. In the Premier League era, no United manager has achieved fewer points per game, or secured a final position as poor as the 15th spot. Delving further back, you have to revisit Frank O'Farrell in the early seventies to find a manager at the club who lost a greater proportion of fixtures. Furthermore, he infamously etched his name in United's annals by experiencing a cup final defeat to Spurs, specifically Postecoglou's iteration of Tottenham.

The game, though, is not often so straightforward. Despite the negative press of his 3-4-2-1 formation, the Portuguese manager departs from a club in a much stronger condition than that which he found. Months ago, following a defeat of Brighton & Hove Albion, the striker Welbeck relayed that teammates were praising their opponents as the finest opposition they had faced in some time. Their football in a thrilling 4-4 draw with Bournemouth was both hopeful and exciting.

Even though it is tough to argue against the dismissal—especially given it was reportedly triggered by his criticism of superiors with poorer track records—Amorim's exit was ultimately stymied by atrocious fortune. If the absence of key stars not happened at the same time as the absence of other pivotal members, he could remain in the role—maybe even.

Fletcher Takes the Reins

Consequently, Darren Fletcher inherits a reasonably positive situation. Important figures like Mason Mount, Bruno Fernandes, and Kobbie Mainoo are back to fitness, while Diallo and Mbeumo will soon rejoin from the Africa Cup of Nations. Merely careful husbandry of this gifted roster is expected to be sufficient to guarantee a finish in the European spots and, with it, continental competition for the following term—in all likelihood in the coveted UEFA Champions League.

The Clarets' Tough Test

Burnley, but, will not be a pushover. Despite boasting only a dozen points and losing three of their most recent five matches, their displays have frequently been stronger than the results suggest. Manager Scott Parker will certainly have his team fired up to get after United who are likely to start an lineup that has lacked cohesion, set up in a system they have been denied for over a year.

Match begins: 8.15pm GMT.
