Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped within a psychic prison constructed from the past of Henry Creel. Their mission for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a defining event from Henry's childhood—a discovery that could contain the key to defeating him permanently.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies not within the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the act wasn't just a simple act of survival.

Like many elements this season, the full story behind the events in the tunnel was first explored the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to sell to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. The man in the mine shaft was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the box could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that the boy was transported in the Abyss, reappearing hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will Byers was possessed by the shadow monster in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a decisive edge in the ultimate battle ahead.
