The people of Israel observe two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
Citizens have gathered around the country to mark two years since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in Gaza.
The assault saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".
Memorial Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government postponed official memorials until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in Tel Aviv. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A high-ranking representative involved in the talks said that an night meeting of negotiations began at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the morning session concluded without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He added that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to reduce the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- An enduring halt to fighting
- The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Future management of the region
Public Reaction
In the city's Hostages Square previously, young a woman - whose brother survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "No location seems like home now and until all the hostages are released no one will feel safe."
"When we see all home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to recover," she added.
Near the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to express their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel reports 48 continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Protester one woman stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the abducted to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be protected."
Research now frequently demonstrate that around the majority of the population desire the war to conclude in return for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Situation
At the area of the gathering, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli attacks continued.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone districts and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.
"As the evening comes, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.
"We are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, particularly my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Humanitarian Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had taken in the remains of six people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.
A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis said another two dead people had been transported. One of them was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get assistance to the southern area, medics reported.
The region's health ministry reported twenty-five of the {territ
